As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.
– Maya Angelou
The St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Center for Nursing Excellence at Eskenazi focuses on recruiting and retaining high quality nurses through expanding the services and continuing education opportunities provided to them. The primary endeavors include:
- Creating nurse residency and fellowship programs
One-year nurse residency and fellowship programs in critical care, burn, and other disciplines provide education and support to assist the graduate nurses in developing clinical decision-making abilities and knowledge, as well as enhancing discipline-specific technical skills.
- Expanding the student extern program
The extern program recruits BSN students who have completed their junior year of college, and empowers them to become active members of the health care team.
- Providing preceptor development opportunities
Eskenazi Health is a major teaching hospital for nurses, with the goal of continually improving the teaching skills of our nurse educators, by supplementing their clinical and technical skills with training in teaching techniques and evidenced based adult learning practices.
- Developing a robust nurse recognition program
Recognition programs emphasize the importance of clinician-patient relationships, clinical knowledge and decision making, as well as teamwork and collaboration. The intent is to motivate and inspire the nursing staff while highlighting the role of nurses across the entire health system.
- Enhance the state-of-the-art simulation lab
The simulation lab offers essential professional development training opportunities for nurses at all levels of experience in a risk free, experiential learning environment to improve the quality of care and promote safety for both the patient and the clinician.
